What is alternative dispute resolution and how might law students get a feel for the discipline before entering legal practice? In this episode, we chat with Dr Rosemary Howell and Niki Nojoumian about ADR, finding your place at law school, and UNSW Law Society's skills competitions.
Dr Howell teaches postgraduate Principled Negotiation at UNSW. She is a nationally accredited mediator and has appeared in the International Who's Who of Mediation since 2013. Her company Strategic Action also provides consulting services on planning, facilitation and training to State and Federal entities around the globe.
Niki is the UNSW Law Society’s skills Vice President. Her portfolio facilitates competitions that provide students with the opportunity to develop and refine legal skills in a practical setting outside of a classroom. To achieve this, the skills portfolio runs internal and external competitions in four key areas: Negotiations, Client Interviewing, Witness Examination and Mediation.

In this episode, we conclude our conversation with the Society’s co-presidents by discussing with Alex Zoras about the year so far, what she hopes for UNSW Law Society in the future and also her time within the society. Giving insight into what it takes to succeed as a law student, listen as she gives her tips and tricks to surviving law school and getting involved with the community.
Apart from leading the Law Society in 2021 and juggling various academic commitments, Alex is also an incredibly accomplished member of our community, representing UNSW in various skills competitions and also being the previous Skills Vice-President. She has previously worked at Bartier Perry as a paralegal and is clerking at Herbert Smith Freehills this summer. She was also the winner of last year’s AFR Top 100 Future Leaders law award.
